How an MOV Works
Nonlinear resistance that clamps overvoltage.

Nonlinear behavior
At normal voltage an MOV draws tiny leakage current. When voltage rises into the surge region, resistance falls sharply and the MOV diverts surge current.
Energy absorption
The surge energy becomes heat in the MOV body. Ratings describe how much impulse energy / current the device can handle before degradation.
Why MOVs dominate LV SPDs
Fast response, compact size, and good clamping for 8/20 µs surges make MOVs ideal for Type 2 applications.
