Common Myths About Lightning Protection

Clear up misconceptions that lead to under-protected installations.

Common Myths About Lightning Protection — Power SPD in utility-scale solar farm inverter station switchgear room

Myth: lightning rods make SPDs unnecessary

External LPS (air terminals, down conductors, earth electrodes) manage direct attachment. SPDs manage electrical transients on power and signal circuits. You usually need both.

Myth: one SPD at the main board is enough

A single entrance SPD leaves residual voltage and locally induced surges. Sensitive electronics often need coordinated Type 2 / Type 3 stages.

Myth: UPS replaces SPD

A UPS can ride through short interruptions, but many UPS inputs remain vulnerable to high-energy surges unless protected upstream and at the load.
